Spartin,

APBA sanctions a buch of Hydro and runabout races in your neckof the woods. I know you are not looking at building specifically a hydro or runabout, but you can meet alot of contacts. When on APBA's site, look under schedules and it will list a host of races in your area. I used to race against a guy named Charlie, can't remember his last name, but he is from Mass. He is one of the best in the country in small hydro's and runabouts. You might want to think about outboard power. Much more cost effective and you will be able to achieve higher speeds as well as have more options for bottom design. You can find small outboard raqcing props for sale all the time for less than 250.00. THere is a guy where I live who has a 12 foot mini offshore boat with a 50 hp merc on it. It runs in the low to mid 60's. It is one of the coolest little boats I have ever seen!

shamless that's what i want to build
i have been doing lots of reserch and think your 100% right out board is the way to go
bigest motor i heard of on this hull is 75 and was told it was butt puckering so that very well my be the magic number for this thing
started to look at merc's to day
hey can you get pic of the mini off shore
and did he run trim tabs
i have found a boat builder next town over will be meeting with him in 2 weeks hes on his way to fla to test new boat
hopeful that will be me next yr
thanks agin for you help

Spartin,

I will give him a call to see if he still has the boat, it was for sale last fall. No he sis not have trim tabs, but I know he had to add a bunch of closed cell foam to the stern for flotation because it would squat so bad in the stern. I will call him today and if he still has it, ask him to e-mail me or get over and take some.

Bill

There was a guy at the Baltimore Boat show quite a few years ago who had a small hydro/jetski type boat with his own engine in it. I remember it was black and supposidly did 75 with the jet and 100+ with a prop conversion. It was around 12 K then. It had to be in the early to mid 90's. Maybe somebody else remembers it too.

ok got the power fig out finaly
was looking at honda bf90 4-stroke but at 384 lbs dont think it will work out plus the cost of the thing at $7500 for motor only
was talking to dealer and he says the yamaha 2-stroke is the way to go weighting in at 261lbs and priced at $5400
the reasion i was worryed about the wight is that im pretty sure i got my protype finished hull and deck to be just under 450lbs
gona make a one off using a male mold
so the finish should be pretty sweet
oh how i hate to long board :)

Sparitn, the boat you and I spoke of is gone, still working on digging up a photo or 2 for you... AS far as a motor, why not check out a used Merc, there are a bunch of them out there for good prices, What ever you do, try to stay away from OMC, you never know what their future holds, especially with them being "for sale"!

Another view,

This boat took 6 months working 7 day a week, 10-12 hours a day to build. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a crash at the end of the first season of racing... This was the last boat the team that I used to work for built from scratch. The only part of the boat that was built in a mold was the sponsons, the rest is hand fabricated

Shameles, You built that??? WOW!

I want one too!! :)
Kid, myself and 2 other people full time, and 4 others part timers who worked on the weekends.

Breakout the checkbook, last time I checked, you could get the hull only for about a quater mill! Add 10 grand for 1 prop, 30 grand for one turbine, 50 grand for one trailer, 100 grand for a hauler and I am not sure what the gear boxes are going for. Of course those are used prices. I do not know how the owners did it because nobody but the Bud boat got BIG money when I was in it. It is getting better, but not much. I have been out of it for 5 years now... :( I would not give up my pleasure boating weekends to go back to it though! :D

Bill, guess I'll stick with the Nova for a while longer ;)

Bill, it is a shame, I do not know what the Offshore guys are up against, but there is no money in Hydroplane racing, unless you work for Bud!

Maybe one of these days, I can build my own boat, probably not, but I can dream :D :beers:
