Would you buy a repowered boat.

Has anyone ever bought a boat that was repowered. There seems to be a deal down in TX on a 93' Formula 336 thats been repowered with Mecrusisers 502 MPI from a 99' Formula. The guy selling it said that the motors came out of a boat that was getting bigger motors, but had no answer on why the boat had been repowered.

Just don't know if this is a no no or something to considered.

Here is the link.

If the motors check out I don't see the issue. The guy probably got a deal on some fuel injected motors a few years ago and wanted to get rid of some old carb'ed engines. Instead of re-building 12-15 year old motors, he bought some 4-5 year old take-outs and dropped them in. They could be as good (or bad) as another boat with original engines.

You pay for a survey. Search hard too; all surveyors are not the same!!! A survey that is indepth is priceless! Someone just "kicking the tires" as a survey is a waste of time in my opinion. There are pleanty of those and they come highly recommended.   I don't see how.

Any engine update/repower that is better stuff is prefered anyway. Saves you the time and money for doing the same. EFI motors in an old carbed boat.....perfect. :D

Repower is not a problem if you know why it needed repowered.
My block was cracked and so I repowered.
Not much choice.
As long as I had a build to do I increased the HP at the same time.
I am in the middle of another "repower" and figure it is OK since it is increasing the HP.

But all I hear on this forum is "how do I get more speed out of my boat"?

And now we are asking "should we get a discount for the repower" because it is not stock.

Sounds kind of hypocritical to me.

Look at the repower and if done right what's the problem?

Looks like an awesome deal if that thing did pass a survey without any water damage.
I would think that the motor would be a pretty good choice too.
I wouldn't have any trouble with those being in there if they were in good shape without a ton of hours or show any abuse. Really what else would you like to see? Unless you were shooting for some aftermarket BIG HP set ups, or Ilmores. For $25k I think it looks good. Even somewhat of a base to start with if you do decide to work 'em over/bigger!
If you were the original owner, had tired carbed base 7.4s, or high hour 454 mags, and found a couple take out 502 MPIs...wouldn't ya???

I do like the boat and the repower doesn't scare me just wanted everyone's opinion. It seems priced really well and hope its priced that way just because of the repower and not something else. The boat is a good size with everything I want in the cabin. I'm thinking of flying down and looking at it and maybe get a survey at the same time. I might have to crunch some numbers on this one, but I would def make some sacrifices and pick it up before I sell mine. Never owned two boats at the same time.

Anyone know of a good surveyer in Naples, FL and a ballpark on how much?

Yes I know this. The boat is in Naples, FL. Apparently this is where is was repowered and is back there for some issue. The last the guy told me was it's waiting on a fuel pump before it they can run there diagnosis, whatever that means.

Supposely this place is highly recommended when it comes to Formulas.

My wife loves the boat. :)

Good Luck..

That's interesting on your cruise speed 40@ 3000rpm.
That is where mine runs.
Wonder if that's an engineering type thing with the larger Formulas?

June 28. 2010 approximately on the 419.
I got a "wild hair" to do something stupid. Lol

I'm in the process of pulling the 502's out of the 419 and installing in the 272.
Putting the 540 650hp in the 419 and building a 3rd 540.
The 272 with the 540's is dangerous to sell to a "non-driver". It will get away from them and possibly hurt themselves.
The 1993 502EFI Mags will make the 272 a 70-75 mph boat.
The 502's only have 250-300 hrs on them.
I'm changing drives also.
Putting the XR's on the 419 and the straight Bravo 1s on the 272.
With the 502 EFIs and full hydraulic steering it will make the 272 a sweet ride for someone.

And hey!!!!
A 419 with triple 540s with XR's will make mine a wave crushing ride.

This broker is really starting to pi$$ me off. After taking forever to get back to me with any info he tells me that the owner wanted to mention that the trailer is not include and then the last shop that had the boat left it uncovered for most of the summer the the upholstery has gone to crap. I ask him what exactly it needs done and he says it needs the bolsters, side panels and other trim pieces re done. I could of sworn at one time one of there ads said trailer included. It never said not included and whats odd is most of the time if its not people post that in there add.

I've asked for some current pics but who knows, they just really seem like they don't want to sell this boat??? If they have another buyer why not just tell me its sold? This seems nothing but a up hill battle.

I'm wondering if he's know saying trailer not included as some sort of bargaining chip because the interior needs redone?

Yep! I know what you mean. It seems the trailer thing is a popular hold out so a buyer gets satisfied with the price of the boat and then up sell on the trailer. I can see where that is fine with someone who puts the boat on a lift otherwise it seems like a bargaining chip like you say.

My experience so far with boat brokers is about like your first sentence. They seem about as disconnected as a realestate broker; no offense to anyone here.

Best of luck

Gotta wonder why some brokers are so unmotivated and just plain thoughtless. Same thing happened to my PQ 340 that AT took on trade. It was pristine when they received it sight unseen at the factory. They even commented on how clean it was for a 5 yo boat. They sent it to a broker in NY who apparently left the cover off it all summer. They did end up selling it after taking back control, but said it had really taken a beating. As did their selling price.

These boats should never be left uncovered. Just plain ole common sense.

SAD
EVERY broker I have dealt with was an Ahole:(
I don't understand it. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot, biting the hand(s) that feed ya...etc. etc.
Maybe there are good ones, but none I have talked to or seen. I know that I ain't mister big bucks or looking for yachts, but would any sale put some coin in their pockets??
One time I called the owner and said he would have had his boat sold except the broker pi$$ed me off, and I am no longer interested. He said it was a buddy of his from high school and I was not the first to tell him same. Gotta wonder what's wrong with sellers at that point. Even if I had a contract, I would be doing what I could to get away from the broker.
SAD

There is another broker up in MI who I called because they have to 311's I wanted to look at. Believe it or not as much as I've talked about and want to get a formula I haven't set foot on one and thats mostly because just from what I've heard and seen about them. I mean come on is there any other kind of boat out there that you can want without even setting foot on by just looking at pics and what people tell you about them.

So anyway the broker up in MI said that he'd give the guy my info and let me know when was a good time to look at them, cause I just wanted to actual set foot on one before I bought one and MI is closer then a lot of other places selling Formulas. That was about two weeks ago and the guy or the broker hasn't contacted me back. I mean come on WTF?

I swear these brokers must not care if they go next to nothing the way they return calls or emails. Just for there lack of communication to make a sale I'm going to low ball the chit out of them. At least private sellers get back in a day or two.
